We deliver gases to hundreds of sites every month. Here are the top five safety issues we still see in 2026 — and simple fixes that take seconds.
1. Cylinders not secured — rolling cylinders = crushed valves or worse. Fix: Chain or strap every cylinder (even short-term) using wall brackets or cart restraints.
2. Regulators swapped between gases — oxygen regulators on acetylene = oil + oxygen = fire risk. Fix: Use gas-specific regulators only (CGA 540 for O₂, CGA 510 for propane, etc.).
3. Leaving valves wide open when not in use — small leaks add up fast. Fix: “Righty-tighty” to hand-tight (don’t overtighten) + crack cylinder valve briefly before attaching regulator to clear debris.
4. Storing oxygen near fuel gases or oil/grease — classic explosion hazard. Fix: Keep oxygen cylinders at least 20 ft away from flammables or use a non-combustible barrier ≥5 ft high.
5. No flashback arrestors on oxy-fuel setups — one backfire can turn a torch into a rocket. Fix: Install arrestors on both torch and regulator ends — we stock Victor, Harris, and Smith models in-store.
Bonus Northern California tip: Wet/rainy season increases rust risk on cylinder bottoms — store on pallets or dunnage to keep them off damp ground.
Safety meeting takeaway: Print this list, post it near your gas storage, and do a 30-second walk-around before lighting up.
